Avindra retain U18 junior tennis title for second successive year

Defending champion Avindra Perera retained the Under 18 Junior National Tennis title when he outclassed Aadavan Pushparaj by two sets to nil in the final played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath, Colombo yesterday.

The final was a repeat of last year where Avindra had to fight hard for his victory against Aadavan, but this time out he had things his own way and his opponent had to play second fiddle for a second year running.

In the other matches played in the boys’ category saw Ashen Silva having a double success winning the Under 14 in which he is top seed and the Under 16 matches that he played while the two top seeded players in the Under 12 and Under 16 age groups Apna Perera and Vibuda Wijebandara too won their matches.

In the girls’ category the four top seeded players in the Under 10, 12, 14 and 16 Vishmi Serasinghe, Anjalika Kurera, Samadhi Jayasinghe and Janali Manamperi won their matches. Vishmi, Anjalika and Janali qualified for the semi finals while Samadhi advanced to the quarter finals.

Meanwhile the 101st National Tennis Championship is being played concurrently with the qualification rounds of the men’s singles event.

Under 10 – Vishmi Serasinghe beat Inuki Jayaweera 9/4. Shenaya Thissera beat Shashini Silva 9/2. Saneshi Willoraarachchi beat Nelini Jayasuirya 9/7. Ruvi Lewkebandara beat Hasali Gajaba 9/6.
Under 12 – Anjalika Kurera beat Dinethya Dharmaratne 2-0 (6/0, 6/2). Tania Doloswala beat Ashanthi Seneviratne 2-1 (6/3, 6/7(5), 6/4). Tharani Alexander beat Heshani Imanga 2-0 (6/0, 7/6(5).
Under 14 – Oshini Herath beat Sethmi Sumanaweera 2-1 (3/6, 6/2, 6/2).
Under 16 – Janali Manamperi beat Anika Seneviratne 2-0 (7/5, 4/1rtd). Sathi Silva beat Prabuddhi Perera 2-0 (7/5, 7/5). Natasha Munaweera beat Savini Jayasuriya 2-0 (6/4, 6/1). Samadhi Jayasinghe beat Nimna Fernando 2-0 (6/2, 6/3).
